How to integrate an AI chatbot into your existing website or CMS

· 7 min read · By Andre Hassler

Integrating an AI chatbot into your existing website or CMS (WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, custom-built) can usually be done without rebuilding your site. It works through a snippet of code, a plugin, or a widget trained on your content. Cost: €500–€1,500 one-time, plus management and API costs.

"Does my whole website need to be rebuilt to get a chatbot?" No — and that's one of the most common questions I hear from business owners with an existing WordPress site, Wix page or custom-built website. In most cases, an AI chatbot is an addition to what you already have, not a reason to start over. In this article I explain how the integration works, what it means per platform, and what to watch out for.

Does your site need to be rebuilt?

In the vast majority of cases: no. An AI chatbot runs as a separate layer on top of your existing website — a widget in the bottom corner that talks to a separate system trained on your content. Your CMS, hosting and design stay unchanged. The only exception: sites so outdated or technically limited that even a small code snippet won't work. In practice, that's rare.

The 3 ways to integrate a chatbot

1. Widget embed (works almost everywhere)

A piece of JavaScript code placed just before the closing </body> tag of your site. This works on virtually any platform: WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, or a fully custom-built website. The widget loads itself and appears as a chat window, usually in the bottom corner.

2. CMS plugin or custom HTML block

On WordPress, the widget code can go in through a plugin (for example an "insert headers and footers" plugin) or directly in the theme. For Wix and Squarespace you use their built-in "code injection" or "custom code" feature. No developer access to hosting required — it all happens through the CMS dashboard.

3. API integration (for custom applications)

Want to integrate the chatbot more deeply — for example connected to your booking system or CRM, with a custom interface instead of a standard widget? Then we use the API directly. That's custom work and takes a bit more build time, but gives you full control over how the chatbot behaves and what it's connected to.

How the integration works, step by step

  1. Audit your site — which CMS, which content, what information is still missing?
  2. Feed it content — the chatbot gets trained on your website, FAQs, PDFs or product information
  3. Styling — the chat window is adapted to your brand (colours, logo, tone), so it doesn't feel like a bolted-on widget
  4. Add the code — via widget embed, plugin or API, depending on your platform
  5. Test — with real questions, including tricky or ambiguous ones
  6. Set escalation rules — when does the bot hand off to WhatsApp or email?
  7. Go live & monitor — during the first weeks we follow the conversations and refine the answers

With a standard integration you're usually live within 1 to 2 weeks.

What does it cost?

Integration type One-time Monthly
Widget embed on existing site €500 – €1,000 €20 – €50
Extended (multilingual, CRM connection) €1,000 – €2,500 €50 – €100
Custom API integration (booking system, own interface) €2,500 – €6,000 €100+

You don't need to switch from WordPress to a custom build to get a chatbot. In fact, almost every chatbot integration we do happens on an existing site, without a platform switch. Still considering a new website anyway? Read WordPress vs. custom website for an honest comparison, separate from the chatbot question.

A real example: Nijenhuis Botenverhuur

🛥️ One chatbot, three languages, no platform switch

At Nijenhuis Botenverhuur, a boat rental business in Wanneperveen, the Netherlands, visitors from the Netherlands, Germany and beyond ask the same questions: prices per boat, availability, and how to book. The chatbot is trained on the existing website content and answers questions automatically in the visitor's language — even outside office hours — and directs people to the booking widget when they're ready to reserve.

The integration ran alongside the existing site, without the CMS or design needing an overhaul. See the full Nijenhuis Botenverhuur case study for the results.

Privacy and GDPR: what should you watch for?

Data stays on EU infrastructure, and you decide which content the bot is allowed to use — you're not giving access to your whole system, only to what you specifically share. The chatbot escalates to a human for sensitive or out-of-scope questions. Ask any provider (including us) how data is stored and processed, and get it documented in a data processing agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add an AI chatbot to my WordPress site without plugin bloat?

Yes. In most cases we add the widget code through a lightweight "headers and footers" plugin or directly in the theme. No heavy chatbot plugin needed that slows your site down.

Does this also work on Wix or Squarespace?

Yes, through the built-in "custom code" feature of these platforms. The widget embed works the same way as on WordPress or a custom-built site.

How long does the integration take?

A standard widget integration is usually live within 1 to 2 weeks, including training the chatbot on your content and testing. Custom API integrations take longer, depending on the connections needed.

Can the chatbot reply in multiple languages if my site only has one?

Yes. Modern AI chatbots automatically detect the visitor's language and reply in it, even if your website itself is only written in one language.

Do I need to switch to a custom website for the chatbot to work well?

No. A chatbot integration is platform-independent. Considerations for switching to a custom build (speed, maintenance, functionality) are a separate question from the chatbot.

Conclusion

Adding an AI chatbot to your existing website or CMS is usually simpler than people expect — no new website required, no mandatory platform switch. It comes down to three things: good content to train the bot on, an integration method that fits your CMS, and clear escalation rules to a human.
