Case: the booking platform for Nijenhuis Boat Rental in Wanneperveen
Nothing against a paper diary and a phone ringing off the hook — until peak season starts. For a boat rental business in the Weerribben-Wieden, a sunny Saturday means: ten people at once who all want a boat, all via phone or a loose email, and you who also has to get the boats ready in the meantime. This is the story of how we turned that chaos into a calm, online booking process for Nijenhuis Boat Rental in Wanneperveen — and what it delivered. Conveniently, Nijenhuis sits, just like me, in Wanneperveen on the edge of Giethoorn.
I'm not telling this case to show off, but because its lessons are recognisable for many business owners in leisure and beyond. The numbers are at the bottom; the approach above them is what matters most.
The starting situation
Nijenhuis is a familiar name for boat rental in the cruising area around Giethoorn, Belt-Schutsloot and Wanneperveen. The business was doing fine, but the old website worked against it instead of with it. A dated look, broken links, no clear navigation — and bookings that still partly ran via loose emails and phone calls. For a holiday experience on the water, that didn't inspire the trust the business actually radiates in person.
So the problem was twofold. At the front, visitors struggled to find what they were looking for and dropped off. At the back, every booking cost manual work: emailing back and forth about availability, prices and engine options, and keeping all of that by hand. Exactly the kind of work that jams up in peak season.
Recognisable? "It's worked this way for years" isn't a problem — until the moment your growth jams up on manual work. The question is never whether the old system works, but what it costs you in time, missed bookings and evenings.
The goals
Before a single line of code was written, we set out what the new site really had to do. Not "look nicer" — that's a consequence, not a goal — but concrete things:
Booking widget
A clear route from orientation to reservation, so a guest books in a few steps without calling or emailing.
Boat categories
Per boat type, clear prices, availability and engine options, so visitors quickly make the right choice.
SEO landing pages
Pages for Giethoorn, Belt-Schutsloot, Wanneperveen and the cruising area, to be found by whoever is looking for a boat in the region.
Cross-sell
Clear routes to the holiday home, campsite and marina — one brand, multiple offerings.
The solution
We built a fast, booking-focused site with the reservation as the heart of the design. The whole information architecture was rebuilt around one question: how do we make it as easy as possible to book a boat? Everything that didn't help with that went out.
1. Homepage with booking widget
Immediately visible how to reserve. No detours via phone or loose emails — the guest sees the steps straight away and can start. Removing friction is almost always the cheapest way to get more bookings.
2. Boat categories with availability
An overview per boat type with prices, availability and engine options. The information people otherwise requested by email now simply sits on the site — that saves the guest waiting time and Nijenhuis a pile of repeat questions.
3. Destination pages and blog
Landing pages for Giethoorn, Belt-Schutsloot and Wanneperveen, plus a blog with seasonal tips and regional articles. That creates findability outside peak season, when people are planning their holiday and don't yet know where to rent a boat.
4. Cross-sell to additional services
Besides boat rental, also clear routes to the holiday home, campsite and marina. One visitor can discover multiple offerings — one brand presenting itself neatly instead of four loose islands.
The result
This is where most cases turn vague. Not this one, because the numbers come straight from Google Search Console. In the three months after launch, compared with the three months before:
+598% organic clicks
From 601 to 4,193 clicks via Google. Nearly a sevenfold increase in the traffic that comes in for free.
+157% impressions
From 32,632 to 83,976 impressions. The site appears far more often in the search results.
Better positions
The average position improved from 27.3 to 18.8 — from page 3 towards the first page.
Booking instead of calling
The information architecture was rebuilt around the most important conversion: completing a reservation.
The best thing about these numbers isn't the percentage growth itself, but what sits underneath: more people find Nijenhuis by themselves via Google, more of them complete their booking online, and all of that without more manual work being added. On the contrary — manual work went away. The site is live at nijenhuis-botenverhuur.com, including an up-to-date blog and clear routes to the additional services.
Important to say honestly: these numbers concern a specific business in a specific period and are no guarantee. But the underlying logic — remove friction, build content around real search questions, and put conversion centre stage — works far more broadly than just boat rental.
What another business owner can learn from this
You don't have to rent boats to take something from this. The three lessons that hold in nearly every sector:
- Build around your most important conversion. For Nijenhuis that's a reservation. For you it might be a quote request or an appointment. Put that one action centre stage and remove anything that distracts from it.
- Put information on your site that you now explain by email. Every question you get often costs you time if it isn't on the site. Prices, availability, options — the more that's clearly there, the less back and forth.
- Make content for those who don't know you yet. Landing pages and blog articles around real search questions bring in people who don't know your name yet. That's the traffic that grows while you sleep.
Why leisure and boat rental benefit especially from online booking
Boat rental has a few traits that make it ideally suited to an online booking process — and that are recognisable for many leisure businesses in the region. First, it's seasonal: your peak sits in a few busy months, exactly when you have the least time to answer the phone. A system that handles bookings on its own catches the most work precisely in that peak.
Second, guests often plan their boating holiday well in advance, in the evening on the sofa, sometimes from Germany. At that moment you're not reachable — but your website is. Whoever then sees availability straight away and can reserve, books; whoever has to send an email first and wait for a reply browses on at the competition in the meantime. So online booking isn't only convenience, it's the difference between holding on to a booking and losing it.
What didn't change
It's tempting to read a case as "everything got overhauled". It didn't, and that's precisely important. The business itself — the boats, the service, the knowledge of the cruising area — was always good. We didn't try to reinvent Nijenhuis. We got the shop window and the counter in order, so that what was already right in reality was also right online. A website can make a good business visible and bookable; it can't save a bad one. At Nijenhuis the foundation was already there — we just stopped letting a dated site work against it.
Frequently asked questions
How long did this project take?
A booking-focused site like this isn't built in a weekend, but also not in a year. By working in milestones, the client saw progress along the way and could steer before more was built.
Will I get the same growth?
No one can honestly promise that — it depends on your market, your starting point and your competition. What I can do: apply the same approach and be honest up front about what's realistic.
Does this work for my sector too?
The principles do. Whether it should be a booking widget, a quote flow or something else in your case, we'll look at together. Browse more projects to get a feel for it.
In short
Nijenhuis Boat Rental went from a dated site with loose emails to a fast booking platform where guests reserve themselves — and saw organic traffic grow by nearly 600% in three months. The core wasn't a trick, but a choice: put the booking centre stage, answer real questions, and build for those you still need to find.
Do you run a leisure business, or something else where bookings and enquiries still cost too much manual work? Book a no-obligation call — I'll just take a look and tell you honestly what I see.
